25 May 2023 marks the 3rd anniversary of the killing of George Floyd
which led to the global movement ‘Black Lives Matter’. In the aftermath of his death and the deaths of countless other Black individuals at the hands of police, people around the world joined together to demand an end to systemic racism and police brutality.
The Black Lives Matter movement has sparked discussions and actions on race inequality and justice that have had lasting impacts. From changes in laws and policies to increased awareness and education, this movement has brought attention to issues that have been ignored for far too long.
However, this anniversary is also a time to acknowledge that the work is far from over. Black people still face disproportionate levels of violence, poverty, and discrimination. There is still a long way to go to create a society where Black people can thrive, free from oppression and systemic racism.
This anniversary is also an opportunity to recognize the countless individuals and organizations that have dedicated themselves to the cause of racial justice. We honor the activists, educators, artists, and everyday people who have contributed to the movement. We also encourage everyone to continue the work, to listen to and elevate the voices of Black people, and to hold ourselves and our institutions accountable for creating a more just and equitable world.
Black Lives Matter. Today, tomorrow, and always.
